SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY A
ONE IN GOD’S PEACE
JN 3: 16-18
MESSAGE
The story of God is a story of unity, for God is one but not alone. God is a family of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, united in divinity. This is how the Scriptures gradually revealed God. This is what the Lord Jesus taught about the Father and the Spirit. This is the way people throughout history experienced the love, mercy, and goodness of God. God is one but not alone.
More than anything else, we need to understand God today not merely as a doctrine or topic for discussion. Rather, we ask him to shower on us the gift of his peace… in our hearts… in our world.
Our God is first of all, Father of Peace, God of peace. “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7). From the heart of the Father flows the gift of peace for all his creatures, and most of all, for us his beloved sons and daughters. When wayward humanity chose rebellion, infidelity, and discord, the Father, in turn, rebuilt and restored understanding and harmony among his children. The apex of his design of peace is in the sending of Jesus his Only Son to renew what has been destroyed by sin and death.
And God the Son, Jesus, is the Prince of Peace (Is 9:6). In order to restore concord between his all-holy Father and his sinful brethren, the Lord offered himself as a sacrifice on the Cross. At the Resurrection, his first greeting was that of peace. He bestowed the gift of peace through forgiveness and the promise of his presence along the way. He established the church as a community of peace; he instituted the sacrament of Confession to bring calm to troubled and sinful hearts. He breathed on us his Spirit of Peace.
Finally, God the Holy Spirit, the Divine Presence in our soul, brings forth the fruit of peace. “In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness.” (Gal 5: 22). It is a peace of relationship as the Spirit unites us to Jesus and to the Father, who we cannot see and yet we feel powerfully through him. The Holy Spirit effects in our body and soul the assurance that all will be well even when the tempest is strongest. His peace allows us to live in peace with God and one another.
REFLECT
Since our one God who is a family of Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is a God of peace, then we must endeavor to promote and live in peace. Rooted in our faith in the Triune God of peace, the world can discover and experience peace. Ask the Lord to teach you how to be an instrument of peace in your environment each day.
