SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING C

WHO DESERVES A KING?

LK 23: 35-43

There are people who do not deserve a King:

Those who think they are greater than a king do not deserve a king. Such are the rulers of the people. “He saved others…” but he cannot save us. He saved others… so what? He saved others, but we do not feel we need him because we live happy, content and sufficient lives. The rulers of the people were sure they did not need a king because they were happier without one.

Those who need proof of the king’s power do not deserve a king. “If you are the king…” then show us what you’ve got. If you are the king, impress us so you will get our attention. If you are the king, convince us so that we will believe you. If you are the king, perform for us what others saw in you. The soldiers were waiting for a king but wanted to be sure they would not be disappointed.

Those who love themselves most and believe only in themselves do not deserve a king. “Save yourself and us…” Actually all the other condemned man wanted to do was escape death at that moment. He did not really want to see his other companion freed. He did not really want to see Jesus break free from the nails and ropes. All he wanted to save was himself. Such a selfish person will never know how to follow a king.

Who deserves a King?

The one who looks into the eyes of Jesus and sees pure love. The one who feels the presence of Jesus and feels a change in his heart. The one who suffers together with the Suffering God and knows he is not alone. The one who has the humility to say: Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

The good thief, as he is now known, realized the greatness of the King at his side. He needed no further proof of his goodness and mercy. His only desire was to surrender himself totally to his love.

To such a one, the most precious promise was made: You will be with me in Paradise.

Lord, give me the humility, the openness, and the sincerity of that repentant thief.
