14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A
SENSITIVE HEART
MT. 11: 25-30
MESSAGE
What is God’s heart like? Today, we hear it from Jesus himself: I am meek and humble of heart. The Almighty God has a heart that is full of tenderness, mercy, and closeness to his people. And still another trait of his heart is his great sensitivity to the situation of those who are in pain, suffering, and troubled. For the Lord also says: Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened… I will give you rest.
Isn’t this what we truly need to hear today? So many people are physically burdened by relentless work for their families, by sickness that seeks healing, by oppressive conditions imposed by other people or societal systems. There are countless too, who are emotionally and psychologically drained by problems: of relationship, of anger and envy, of endless conflicts in their lives at home, at work, or in the community.
Then increasing also are those who suffer spiritually because they have disconnected themselves from God, or lost a sense of purpose and mission, or have given up hope of finding the meaning of their lives. Yes, many of us carry heavy burdens in our body, mind and spirit as we go through our day to day existence.
It is so encouraging that in the midst of all these, the Lord has a sensitive heart: beating with us, feeling for us, concerned and compassionate to us. He assures us that if we cast all our cares on him, if we approach him and surrender our troubles to him, the yoke we carry will be easy. Why? Because his yoke is a shared one; he will carry it with us, walk with us, accompany us.
