33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME C
DO NOT FEAR THE END
LK 21: 5-19
MESSAGE
We do not go to church to feel afraid or threatened. Yet, when we listen to the Gospel, we cannot help but feel uneasy. Imagine the Lord Jesus speaking of wars and rebellions, earthquakes and calamities, especially after we have just experienced a series of tremors across the country, and as tensions rise over our nation’s sovereign rights against China. This message, both for Jesus’ listeners and for us today, is certainly not for the faint of heart.
As often happens when such things are spoken of, people ask the basic question: Is the end near? Are we at the brink of disaster? We cannot fault those who immediately think of preparing for the end.
However, the Lord Jesus is quick to remind us that these events do not yet signal the end. A realistic look at human and worldly affairs does not mean surrendering to fate. Rather, when destruction comes, we must be ready to rebuild. When wars arise, we must be ready to advocate for peace. When calamities strike, we must respond with compassion and unity.
Human beings are imperfect, and conflict will always exist. The universe is not yet complete, and nature will at times disturb us. The faith is not yet fully accepted, so rejection and persecution will come. Yet the Lord’s message remains constant: Do not be afraid. God is stronger than evil. Do not be terrified; I will be your defense.
REFLECT
We are a people often struck by disaster and calamity, burdened by greed and corruption among those in power. But our true strength lies not in fear, but in faith; not in doubt, but in trust. Lord Jesus, rescue us!
