Lent 2026 Day 2: Choose God, choose the good

Why do I fall back into sin time and again, even when I try so hard to avoid it? Why do I still make wrong choices, even though my heart longs to live in righteousness, holiness, and truth?

The readings today speak very clearly to this struggle. God created us free, with the capacity to love wholeheartedly and also with the ability to withhold love when it demands sacrifice. The first reading reminds us of what happens the moment we wake up each morning. We are confronted with countless choices. Some lead to life and goodness. Others lead us toward harm. And often the things that attract us most easily carry hidden traps that draw us into self‑indulgence and selfishness.

Our God is a God of freedom. He invites us to choose the good and encourages us to desire it with courage and generosity. Yet He never forces us. Made in His image and likeness, we have intellect, will, and daily opportunities to use them well.

In the Gospel, Jesus offers the same challenge. To follow Him, we must want Him. We must listen to His voice and take up the cross. Becoming His disciple is not a passive experience. It is the daily decision to commit ourselves to His way of life, His values, and His mission for the good of others.

Let us ask the Lord for the grace to use our freedom wisely. When so many options stand before us each day, may His Spirit help us choose love over hatred, service over laziness, and sacrifice over selfishness.

Jesus, free my heart so that I may choose what You love.
