THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT A
HOW TO OPEN YOUR EYES
John 4:5-42
MESSAGE
The eyes of the Samaritan woman were being opened… slowly; her vista was becoming wide; her recognition getting clearer; her faith building up.
At first, she saw Jesus the Jew, who couldn’t share anything in common with a Samaritan like her. Then she opined that Jesus must be greater than the patriarch Jacob who built the well from where she draws water. After hearing the Lord’s promise of life-giving water, she began to think of him as the much-awaited Messiah, the Christ of God.
How were the woman’s eyes opened? How did her understanding and faith become more certain and more firm? It was because she did not avoid the Lord but conversed with him with sincerity and trust. She stayed with Jesus and allowed his presence and his words to pierce her heart.
Whatever condition our faith today may be, is it important to remain in contact with God, to spend time in his presence, to let him know the thirst we have for life, to let our relationship with him grow.
REFLECT
Lent is a call to a deeper encounter with God in prayer. Are you ready for serious prayer, for additional moments of prayer, for trusting and surrendering prayer? As we go through the exercises of prayer, fasting and sacrifice for others in need, let us take this opportunity Lent gives to quench our thirst for Jesus, the Living Water.
