25th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME C

WHO CAN WE STILL TRUST?

LK 16: 1-13

MESSAGE

Perhaps it will be a good idea to put up a sign along the road – “Wanted: People I Can Trust.” This is what the world needs badly today.

I recently learned of a transaction between two people. The seller was unsure of the buyer since deception is now a plague in commerce. The buyer too was wary of the seller since there are plenteous scammers in the market. In the economy, as well as in politics, education, and even religion, so many are fake, liars, corrupt, and inauthentic; trustworthy people are in great demand.

The Gospel echoes this clamor for trust. Who is the trustworthy person in the mind of the Lord Jesus Christ? It is the honest one, the devoted one, the one who is responsible in both big and small affairs, the one who can be relied on to truly serve from the heart.

And Jesus is “that truly trustworthy” person. The Letter to the Hebrews even say that he is the Great High Priest because he is worthy of trust. The Lord devotedly served his Father, obeying and offering to him all of himself. The Lord also honestly loved all of humanity, all of us his brothers and sisters as he brought us salvation to the last drop of his blood.

REFLECT

This Gospel teaching is a good chance for self-examination. Are we too, trustworthy? Rate yourself in the values proposed by the Lord today: honesty, devotion, sense of responsibility, dependability. Do we find these virtues in our hearts? “Lord, as we look for trustworthy people in our daily lives, may we be that kind of persons to others we meet each day.” Amen.
