Lent: Holy Monday
The example of Judas
Judas regretted the expensive perfume that the woman poured on Jesus’ feet, not because its value could have been used to help the poor. His true intention was to sell the perfume so that he could pocket the money for himself. In the midst of life’s crises, many of us become greedy. There is nothing wrong with preparing for the needs of oneself and one’s family. But it is wrong when we no longer consider the needs of others.
Whenever a social or economic crisis comes, people begin hoarding supplies and necessities. Bread, eggs, alcohol, and toilet paper run out in stores. Some vendors even raise the prices of their goods to take advantage of consumers. The same thing happens during natural calamities like volcanic eruptions or typhoons; people scramble to fill up their cupboards out of fear. Now, if these people were to look at the piles and piles of supplies in their homes that they do not even use, what do you think they will feel later? If this kind of behavior continues, can we still call ourselves true Christians?
Lord, remove from me the virus of greed for my own benefit. Teach me to trust and to stand firm in the belief that You will not abandon me when I show concern for the needs of others.
