Lent: Holy Tuesday

The example of Peter

Peter truly loved the Lord, but not as valiantly as he declared it to be. That is why he said he was willing to lay down his life for Jesus. But was this proven to be true? As the Lord had predicted, Peter denied three times that he even knew Jesus, out of fear of being implicated in the suffering He was undergoing. It appears that Peter was merely boasting, putting on a show, speaking out of pride rather than sincerity.

Why do we feel the need to show off or impress others? Why are we afraid to admit our weaknesses and shortcomings? Why must we always appear to be the hero or the one in the lead? So many relationships have been damaged because of this attitude. So much trust has been destroyed because of this behavior. Would it not be better if we were honest and realistic, acknowledging our strengths while also admitting our weaknesses, so that we may better help others and allow ourselves to be helped as well?

Lord, heal the virus of pride in my heart and mind. Grant me a truthful and realistic understanding of myself, so that I may offer my strength and talents, and humbly acknowledge my weaknesses and limitations in life, asking for help when I need it.
