14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME B

REJECTING “REJECTION”

MK 6: 1-6

MESSAGE

The Lord was off to a good start. He had a warm homecoming in his native place. He taught well at the synagogue. His neighbors were spellbound by his words. And then, the unexpected happened… the tail of the serpent… the signs of rejection emerged. They scrutinized his background, his family, his knowledge and his power. This affected the Lord deeply in his heart.

In our age marked by rapid connection and communication, we still experience the swift rejections. We live in the era of “cancel culture.” When what we do or say doesn’t seem to fit the politically correct, when it is not easy on the ears, when our correction is deemed not needed, we shun, avoid and ostracize each other. Who has not been through this cold treatment or rebuff in the school, work, church, and even at home?

The Lord Jesus suffered rejection just for representing God faithfully before others. But though affected, he did not allow rejection to defeat him as he continued to preach, heal and minister to all those in need with renewed patience and determination.

REFLECT

It is true that rejection, especially by those we love and care for, is a very frightening situation. If you have gone through this experience, ask the Lord for the gift of healing; ask the Lord for the gift of commitment to what you believe is your mission. Defeat rejection with faith in the Father who believes in you, and faith in Jesus who suffered the same as you.
