7TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME C
BE THE BIGGER PERSON
Lk 6: 27-38
MESSAGES
Some biblical messages offer comfort and consolation, while others challenge and unsettle us. Few teachings of Jesus confound both the mind and heart more than the words of today’s Gospel.
It is natural—even instinctive—to retaliate when we are wronged, to seek justice when we are hurt, to demand repayment for what is borrowed, and to abide by the principle of “an eye for an eye.”
Yet, Jesus calls us to a higher way of living. He invites us to see with the eyes of faith—eyes that not only recognize what is just but embrace what is merciful. His command is radical: not only to forgive but to love even our enemies, not only to lend but to give without expecting anything in return, not only to lower our defenses but to actively pursue peace.
It is difficult to imagine letting go of past wrongs, relinquishing what is rightfully ours, or refraining from judgment toward those who hurt us. Yet, this is possible because Jesus, through His death and resurrection, empowers us with the grace to give and forgive. For those who strive to live out His words, He promises great blessings—you will not be condemned, you will be forgiven, and you will receive all that you truly need.
Let us ask the Lord for the grace to accept His challenge: to be the bigger person, to love as He loves, and to reflect His mercy in our daily lives.
REFLECT
Who are the people who have hurt you or made life difficult for your loved ones? While forgiveness and love may not come instantly, begin by lifting them up in prayer. Ask God to grant you the grace to desire peace, even if only in small steps. As you surrender your pain to Him, you will find that peace will slowly take root in your heart, too.
