DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY/ SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER C

HIS MERCY IS TRUTH!

Jn 20: 19-31

MESSAGE

Can you blame the apostle Thomas for not easily believing that the Lord Jesus rose from the dead? Even in his time he was wary of fake news, he was cautious of disinformation. The Pharisees paid the soldiers to tell a different story, that the body of the Lord was stolen. Aside from that, there were wagging tongues, wild imaginations, and crafty storytelling all around. Thomas loved the Lord, but not fake news about the Lord!

Like us today, Thomas demanded “receipts” – proofs or evidences that come from an actual fact, an indisputable event that the Lord is risen. And Thomas found his facts at last, when he came face to face with Jesus and beheld, and even touched, his wounds. The Resurrection cannot be proven by mere claims, not even by tales of victory and exciting narratives. Nothing less than the wounds can identify that Jesus is Lord over life and death!

In the Resurrection, the mercy of God prevailed. And this mercy came at a price. That is why mercy is not about emotions, not feelings, not even decisions. Mercy is the character of one who knows how to love… a love beyond measure… a love unafraid of sustaining wounds for the beloved.

The mercy of Jesus for us took him to the cross, fastened him there in extreme agony, and took all of his last breath and blood for the sake of his sinful brothers and sisters. Such is the mercy of the Father who mourned his Only Son’s pain. Such is the mercy of the Son who crossed the threshold of death. Such is the mercy of the Spirit who wept at infidelity of the world. But the wounds of Jesus, far from being a source of failure or shame, became the proof of healing, salvation, and above all, mercy.

REFLECT

In this great season of Easter, let us continue to open our hearts to experience the mercy of the Lord. Let us trust his Merciful Heart completely. And let us celebrate this 50 days of glory by showing mercy to those in need.   HAPPY EASTER TO ALL! JESUS, KING OF MERCY, I TRUST IN YOU!
